The primary purpose of IES RP-7-17 is to serve as a guide and educational tool for the design of permanently installed lighting systems for industrial facilities. This Recommended Practice deals entirely with lighting and does not give advice on the construction of a facility. The scope of this practice covers the design of new indoor and outdoor lighting systems for new industrial facilities as well as the redesign of lighting systems in existing industrial facilities. Recommendations are based on quality lighting practices, including: the safe movement of vehicles and people, enhancing the productivity and comfort of employees, conserving energy, and minimizing maintenance. Recommended minimum maintained lighting levels and maximum uniformity ratio guidelines are provided but are subject to variation for special circumstances when based upon sound engineering judgment.

This Practice does not include all information for mixed application areas such as parking lots, offices, outdoor environments, commercial facilities, or daylighting design. For these crossover applications, the associated Recommended Practice documents should be used in conjunction with this Practice to provide the lighting recommendations.

In short, this Recommended Practice will help the reader make intelligent choices to achieve the lighting goals with a minimum of expense of time and capital.

These test methods cover procedures and definitions for the mechanical testing of wrought and cast steel, stainless steels, and related alloys. The various mechanical tests herein described are used to determine properties required in the product specifications. Variations in testing methods are to be avoided and standard methods of testing are to be followed to obtain reproducible and comparable results. In those cases where the testing requirements for certain products are unique or at variance with these general procedures, the product specification testing requirements shall control.

Attention is directed to ASTM A 880 and E 1595 when there may be a need for information on criteria for evaluation of testing laboratories.

In this important new book, Daniel Loick argues that in order to become sensible to the violence imbedded in our political routines, philosophy must question the current forms of political community – the ways in which it organizes and executes its decisions, in which it creates and interprets its laws – much more radically than before. It must become a critical theory of sovereignty and in doing so eliminate coercion from the law.

The book opens with a historical reconstruction of the concept of sovereignty in Bodin, Hobbes, Rousseau, and Kant. Loick applies Adorno and Horkheimer’s notion of a ‘dialectic of Enlightenment’ to the political sphere, demonstrating that whenever humanity deemed itself progressing from chaos and despotism, it at the same time prolonged exactly the violent forms of interaction it wanted to rid itself from. He goes on to assemble critical theories of sovereignty, using Walter Benjamin’s distinction between ‘law-positing’ and ‘law-preserving’ violence as a terminological source, engaging with Marx, Arendt, Foucault, Agamben and Derrida, and adding several other dimensions of violence in order to draw a more complete picture. Finally, Loick proposes the idea of non-coercive law as a consequence of a critical theory of sovereignty.

He joined the School of Civil and Structural Engineering at Dublin Institute of Technology as a Lecturer in Civil Engineering in 2003, where he chairs the Bachelor of Engineering Technology degree programme in Civil Engineering. The third edition of EU Administrative Law provides comprehensive coverage of the administrative system in the EU and the principles of judicial review that apply in this area. The chapters in the first half of the book deal with all the principal variants of the EU administrative regime. Thus there are chapters dealing with the history and taxonomy of the EU administrative regime; direct administration; shared administration; comitology; agencies; social partners; and the open method of coordination. The coverage throughout focuses on the legal regime that governs the particular form of administration and broader issues of accountability, drawing on literature from political science as well as law.

C. Yan Cheng Ph.D. is a senior scientist at the Population Council’s Center for Biomedical Research, New York, affiliated with the Council’s Reproductive Health program, where his research focuses on developing new male contraceptive methods through a better understanding of male fertility and infertility, and on the biology of the blood-testis barrier and the mechanism by which environmental toxicants induce testicular injury. He serves as an ad-hoc reviewer of grant proposals submitted to the National Institutes of Health’s Cellular, Molecular and Integrative Reproduction Study Section and the Endocrinology, Metabolism, Nutrition and Reproductive Sciences Study Section. He holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry and cell biology from the University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, after an undergraduate degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research has been supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health, for the last three decades. He has published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers. He was awarded the Richard E. Weizman Memorial Award from the Endocrine Society in 1988 and received the Best Scientific Paper Award from the American Society of Andrology in 1997. He also served as the Editor-in-Chief of the peer-review journal Spermatogenesis from 2011 through 2016.
