Devin DeWeese, Ph.D. (1985), Indiana University, is a Professor of Central Eurasian Studies at Indiana University. His publications on the religious history of Islamic Central Asia include Islamization and Native Religion in the Golden Horde (Penn State, 1994).
Jo-Ann Gross, Ph.D. (1982), New York University, is Professor of Middle Eastern and Central Asian History at The College of New Jersey. Her publications on Sufism and shrine culture in Islamic Central Asia include The Letters of Khwaja ?Ubayd Allah Ahrar and his Associates, co-authored with Asom Urunbaev (Brill, 2002).

Kierkegaard was driven to write The Book on Adler after news spread that a Danish pastor, Adolph P. Adler, claimed to have experienced a revelation in which Christ dictated a new doctrine. Like many others, Kierkegaard was intrigued by Adler–but for different reasons than most. Over the eight years during which Kierkegaard worked on the manuscript, the phenomenon of Adler became a concern secondary to the larger question of authority. Kierkegaard revised the manuscript many times, and published a segment of it as “The Difference between a Genius and an Apostle” in Two Ethical-Religious Essays, but did not publish the work as a whole before his death. The latest integral version of The Book on Adler is included here, along with excerpts from the earlier drafts and a sampling of writing by Adler himself

About the Author
H. Byron Earhart studied under Mircea Eliade and Joseph M. Kitagawa at the University of Chicago, where he received a doctorate in History of Religions. He has conducted research in Japan for his dissertation on the “mountain religion” of Shugendo, and for work on folk religion and new religions. He is professor emeritus in the Department of Comparative Religion at Western Michigan University, which awarded him a Distinguished Faculty Scholar award for his numerous publications. A number of his works have been translated into Japanese. His most recent book is MOUNT FUJI: ICON OF JAPAN (University of South Carolina, 2011). His next book is a comparative study of amulets.
