This book is long overdue. I am perhaps very fortunate In having been able to collect, collate and evaluate the material for this book before the cataclysmic events In Afghanistan, Turkey and Iran were to rock the world. My stay In Iran as a doctoral candidate brought on the feeling, In 1977 and 1978, that something was going to happen, that the Pahlavi dynasty, for instance, would soon reach the end of the road. So, when I then began writing about Soviet-Iranian relations of the interwar period, a purely historical piece, I sensed that I was writing-like all historians-with a definite political persuasion. And, as is the case with most historians, my Integrated picture necessarily had to reveal both the contemptible and the admirable. That picture will, I hope, serve as a good background to recent Iranian history; some readers may even find in It a vague, distant link with the recent Soviet invasion of Afghanistan-which, to me, has always seemed open and obvious. Will this now be followed by another Soviet offensive in Iran? It Is not easy for me to say: the continuing ” great game” of international politics wlll be the best judge of that.lowe a sincere debt of gratitude to Professor Harlsh Kapur of the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, for having read my manuscript and for having made many critical suggestions which helped improve it.
