Sufism : A New History of Islamic Mysticism
Knysh, Alexander
Document ID: 5115822 Download Format: PDF
Description:
A pathbreaking history of Sufism, from the earliest centuries of Islam to the present After centuries as the most important ascetic-mystical strand of Islam, Sufism saw a sharp decline in the twentieth century, only to experience a stunning revival in recent decades. In this comprehensive new history of Sufism from the earliest centuries of Islam to today, Alexander Knysh, a leading expert on the subject, reveals the tradition in all its richness. Knysh explores how Sufism has been viewed by both insiders and outsiders since its inception. He examines the key aspects of Sufism, from definitions and discourses to leadership, institutions, and practices. He devotes special attention to Sufi approaches to the Qur’an, drawing parallels with similar uses of scripture in Judaism and Christianity. He traces how Sufism grew from a set of simple moral-ethical precepts into a sophisticated tradition with professional Sufi masters (shaykhs) who became powerful players in Muslim public life but whose authority was challenged by those advocating the equality of all Muslims before God. Knysh also examines the roots of the ongoing conflict between the Sufis and their fundamentalist critics, the Salafis–a major fact of Muslim life today. Based on a wealth of primary and secondary sources, Sufism is an indispensable account of a vital aspect of Islam.

Description:
Ordoliberalism and the ‘Freiburg School’ have gained traction in contemporary political economy in response to two factors: a rising interest in governmentality studies and the banking, financial and sovereign debt crisis in Europe. In the face of these crises, Germany has assumed a position of quasi-hegemony in the European Union, making decisions about bailouts, the politics of crisis management and the rise of austerity. This volume gathers together English translations of seminal ordoliberal texts by thinkers ranging from Walter Eucken and Wilhelm Röpke to Franz Böhm, Alexander Rüstow and Hans Grossmann-Doerth. Offering some foundational insights into ordoliberalism, these essays give insight into a field that is much misunderstood outside Germany. The second half of the book comprises of analyses of contemporary issues in light of ordoliberal thought, showing how its ideas endure and relate directly to austerity policy across Europe.

A short description : Reveals the ideal of a sustainable ecosocialist world in Marx’s writings
Karl Marx, author of what is perhaps the world’s most resounding and significant critique of bourgeois political economy, has frequently been described as a “Promethean.” According to critics, Marx held an inherent belief in the necessity of humans to dominate the natural world, in order to end material want and create a new world of fulfillment and abundance—a world where nature is mastered, not by anarchic capitalism, but by a planned socialist economy. Understandably, this perspective has come under sharp attack, not only from mainstream environmentalists but also from ecosocialists, many of whom reject Marx outright.
Kohei Saito’s Karl Marx’s Ecosocialism lays waste to accusations of Marx’s ecological shortcomings. Delving into Karl Marx’s central works, as well as his natural scientific notebooks—published only recently and still being translated—Saito also builds on the works of scholars such as John Bellamy Foster and Paul Burkett, to argue that Karl Marx actually saw the environmental crisis embedded in capitalism. “It is not possible to comprehend the full scope of [Marx’s] critique of political economy,” Saito writes, “if one ignores its ecological dimension.”
Saito’s book is crucial today, as we face unprecedented ecological catastrophes—crises that cannot be adequately addressed without a sound theoretical framework. Karl Marx’s Ecosocialism shows us that Marx has given us more than we once thought, that we can now come closer to finishing Marx’s critique, and to building a sustainable ecosocialist world.

The subject of politics : Slavoj Žižek’s political philosophy
An Introduction to Slavoj Žižek’s Political Philosophy with a distinctive focus on Subjectivity. *The Subject of Politics* provides a new study of Slavoj Žižek’s political philosophy. Focusing on the combination of psychoanalytic theory and philosophy, the book offers an overview of Žižek’s analysis of contemporary society. In five chapters, the reader is introduced to Žižek’s method, his view of the political impasse in the postmodern world, and his suggestion for a way ahead to renewed action and political invention. Rich in examples, the book gives an engaging and entertaining tour around the landscape of Žižek’s political endeavour, while at the same time insisting on a more systematic and piecemeal approach than the Slovenian tends to offer himself.
“… a forceful and marvelously well written study of Slavoj Žižek’s political philosophy. Animated by the authors’ own profound engagement in political thinking the book provides an exhilarating guide through the crucial and most interesting points of Žižek’s political thought….” Dr. Alenka Zupančič, Ljubljana.
“Over the last decade Slavoj Žižek has emerged as one of the most important political thinkers of our time. This book shares the flare of Žižek’s writings: it is engaging, witty, critical, and always to the point. I feel confident it will find a large and eager audience.” Professor Dr. Mladen Dolar, University of Ljubljana.

Rex Butler
Acumen, 2014 – Philosophy – 299 pages
Slavoj i ek is the most popular and discussed philosopher in the world today. His prolific writings across philosophy, psychoanalysis, political and social theory, film, music and religion always engage and provoke. The power of his ideas, the breadth of his references, his capacity for playfulness and confrontation, his willingness to change his mind and his refusal fundamentally to alter his argument all have worked to build an extraordinary international readership as well as to elicit much critical reaction. The i ek Dictionary brings together leading i ek commentators from across the world to present a companion and guide to i ekian thought. Each of the 60 short essays examines a key term and, crucially, explores its development across i ek s work and how it fits in with other concepts and concerns. The dictionary will prove invaluable both to readers coming to i ek for the first time and to those already embarked on the i ekian journey.
