Debra Rose, PhD, is a professor in the division of kinesiology and health science and director of the Center for Successful Aging at California State University at Fullerton. She also serves as codirector of the Fall Prevention Center of Excellence at the University of Southern California. Her primary research focus is on the enhancement of mobility, postural control, and the prevention of falls in later years.

Rose is nationally and internationally recognized for her work in assessment and programming for fall risk reduction. Her research in fall risk reduction in the elderly has been published in numerous peer-reviewed publications, including the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neurology Report, and the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity—where she also served as an editor in chief. She was an expert contributor to Global Report on Falls Prevention in Older Age, published by the World Health Organization in 2007.

Rose is the creator of the innovative fall risk reduction program FallProof™, which was recognized by the Health Promotion Institute of the National Council on Aging (NCOA) in 2006 as a Best Practice program in health promotion. This program is currently being implemented in numerous community-based settings and retirement communities throughout the United States.

Rose was also the recipient of the 2013 Herbert A. DeVries Award for Distinguished Research on Aging from the American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation. She is a fellow and past president of the National Academy of Kinesiology (formerly American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education) and former executive board member of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity.

The book is divided into four parts. Part I provides the basics of exercise pharmacology, exercise physiology, and autonomic pharmacology; Part II presents chapters on the major cardiovascular and respiratory drug classes; Part III describes the frequently prescribed medications for such common conditions as diabetes, depression, pain, fever, inflammation, and obesity; and Part IV includes discussions of supplements and commonly used drugs such as caffeine, nicotine, cannabis, and performance-enhancing drugs.

In Parts II through IV, the chapters include an overview of the pathology the drugs are designed to treat, how the drug works in the human body, the effect of exercise on how the body responds to a drug, and how exercise changes the fate of the drug in the body. Chapters also include information on the drug’s possible health risks and whether taking the drug comes under scrutiny of sport-regulating agencies.

Throughout, figures and tables help to illustrate and summarize content. Most chapters open with an on-going case example to apply and preview chapter content. Mark D. Mamrack is a faculty member at Wright State University in the Department of Biological Sciences. He currently serves as Associate Dean of the College of Science & Mathematics. He received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University and his doctorate from Baylor College of Medicine. He studied protein phosphorylation and its role in cancer during post-doctoral work at Oak Ridge National Lab (Oak Ridge, Tennessee). While at Oak Ridge, he was recruited by the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Oak Ridge to teach cell biology to first-year Ph.D. students. It was that experience that resulted in his taking a faculty position at Wright State University where he continued his research into cell signaling and growth control. He has taught exercise and sport pharmacology since 2002. His experience in teaching the class led to the creation of this text.

Genome sequencing and assembly methods have been thoroughly revised including a survey of four genome projects: human, Neanderthal, giant panda, and barley. Coverage of genome annotation emphasizes genome-wide RNA mapping, with CRISPR-Cas 9 and GWAS methods of determining gene function covered. The knowledge gained from these techniques forms the basis of the three chapters that describe the three main types of genomes: eukaryotic, prokaryotic (including eukaryotic organelles), and viral (including mobile genetic elements). Coverage of genome expression and replication is truly genomic, concentrating on the genome-wide implications of DNA packaging, epigenome modifications, DNA-binding proteins, non-coding RNAs, regulatory genome sequences, and protein-protein interactions. Also included are applications of transcriptome analysis, metabolomics, and systems biology. The final chapter is on genome evolution, focusing on the evolution of the epigenome, using genomics to study human evolution, and using population genomics to advance plant breeding. This book provides theoretical concepts and applications of fractals and multifractals to a broad range of audiences from various scientific communities, such as petroleum, chemical, civil and environmental engineering, atmospheric research, and hydrology. In the first chapter, we introduce fractals and multifractals from physics and math viewpoints. We then discuss theory and practical applications in detail. In what follows, in chapter 2, fragmentation process is modeled using fractals. Fragmentation is the breaking of aggregates into smaller pieces or fragments, a typical phenomenon in nature. In chapter 3, the advantages and disadvantages of two- and three-phase fractal models are discussed in detail. These two kinds of approach have been widely applied in the literature to model different characteristics of natural phenomena. In chapter 4, two- and three-phase fractal techniques are used to develop capillary pressure curve models, which characterize pore-size distribution of porous media. Percolation theory provides a theoretical framework to model flow and transport in disordered networks and systems. Therefore, following chapter 4, in chapter 5 the fractal basis of percolation theory and its applications in surface and subsurface hydrology are discussed. In chapter 6, fracture networks are shown to be modeled using fractal approaches. Chapter 7 provides different applications of fractals and multifractals to petrophysics and relevant area in petroleum engineering. In chapter 8, we introduce the practical advantages of fractals and multifractals in geostatistics at large scales, which have broad applications in stochastic hydrology and hydrogeology. Multifractals have been also widely applied to model atmospheric characteristics, such as precipitation, temperature, and cloud shape. In chapter 9, these kinds of properties are addressed using multifractals. At watershed scales, river networks have been shown to follow fractal behavior. Therefore, the applications of fractals are addressed in chapter 10. Time series analysis has been under investigations for several decades in physics, hydrology, atmospheric research, civil engineering, and water resources. In chapter 11, we therefore, provide fractal, multifractal, multifractal detrended fluctuation analyses, which can be used to study temporal characterization of a phenomenon, such as flow discharge at a specific location of a river. Chapter 12 addresses signals and again time series using a novel fractal Fourier analysis. In chapter 13, we discuss constructal theory, which has a perspective opposite to fractal theories, and is based on optimizationof diffusive exchange. In the case of river drainages, for example, the constructal approach begins at the divide and generates headwater streams first, rather than starting from the fundamental drainage pattern.

Kierkegaard was driven to write The Book on Adler after news spread that a Danish pastor, Adolph P. Adler, claimed to have experienced a revelation in which Christ dictated a new doctrine. Like many others, Kierkegaard was intrigued by Adler–but for different reasons than most. Over the eight years during which Kierkegaard worked on the manuscript, the phenomenon of Adler became a concern secondary to the larger question of authority. Kierkegaard revised the manuscript many times, and published a segment of it as “The Difference between a Genius and an Apostle” in Two Ethical-Religious Essays, but did not publish the work as a whole before his death. The latest integral version of The Book on Adler is included here, along with excerpts from the earlier drafts and a sampling of writing by Adler himself.

Dr. Chivukula Sree Rama Prabhu has held prestigious positions with Government of India and various Institutions. He retired as the Director General of National Informatics Centre (NIC) Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology Government of India, New Delhi, and has worked in various capacities at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), CMC, TES and TELCO (now Tata Motors). He was also an international resource faculty for the Programs of APO (Asian Productivity Organization), and represented India on the International Panel at Venture 2004 held by APO at Osaka, Japan. He taught and researched at the University of Central Florida, Orlando and also had a brief stint as a Consultant to NASA Cape Canaveral.

Mr. Prabhu was unanimously elected and served as the Chairman of Computer Society of India (CSI), Hyderabad Chapter. He is presently working as an Advisor at KL University, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh and as a Director, Research and Innovation at Keshav Memorial Institute of Technology (KMIT), Hyderabad.

He obtained his master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay after a bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad in 1976. He has guided a large number of student research projects at master’s level and has published several papers.
