We are witnessing the development of new technologies that could have a dramatic impact on markets for both skilled and unskilled labour, including the use of Big Data. In addition, many welfare states have once again been restructured, sometimes weakening states protection of employees. This timely book provides a systematic and vigorous analysis of the impact of new technology on the labour market and different kinds of welfare states.
The book offers a novel contribution to the discussion of how welfare states can be maintained and developed to support groups in society who often need aid from a welfare state system. It also highlights the risk of increased social division as a consequence of these developments, and considers whether or not our response to this divide will have negative repercussions on the way societies function.
With comprehensive analysis of the sharing and platform economies as well as new types of inequality, Technology and the Future of Work will appeal to academics and graduate students of social policy and readers interested in societal change more broadly.

Human Resource Management in Sport and Recreation, Third Edition, provides current and future practitioners with a solid foundation in research and application of human resource management in the sport and recreation industries. The third edition prepares students for success by bringing into focus the three divergent groups of people who constitute human resources in sport and recreation organizations: paid professional workers, volunteers, and the clients themselves.
Dr. Packianathan Chelladurai, pioneer in the field of sport management, continues to bring his expertise to this edition; he is joined by new coauthor Dr. Shannon Kerwin, an active researcher in organizational behavior and human resource management in sport. With more than 50 collective years of experience in teaching management of human resources, Chelladurai and Kerwin synthesize the core dynamics of human resources and the management of these resources as well as the role of the sport and recreation manager.
The third edition’s updated references, examples, and studies reflect the increased growth, interest, and complexity in human resource management in recreation and sport in recent years. Additional enhancements of the third edition include the following:
• A new opening chapter on the significance of human resources describes consumer services, professional services, and human services and provides a model for the subsequent chapters.
• A greater emphasis is placed on recruitment and training as an essential component of success.
• New “Technology in Human Resource Management” and “Diversity Management of Human Resources” sidebars connect theory to practice for sport managers as they confront contemporary issues in the workplace.
• Case studies at the end of each chapter help students apply concepts from the chapter to real-world scenarios.
• Instructor ancillaries help instructors prepare for class with the use of an instructor guide with a syllabus, tips for teaching, and additional resources, as well as an image bank.
In addition, updated pedagogical aids include learning objectives, summaries, lists of key terms, comprehension questions, and discussion questions to guide student learning through each chapter. Sidebars throughout the text provide applied concepts, highlight relevant research, and offer digestible takeaways.
Organized into four parts, the text begins by outlining the unique and common characteristics of the three groups of human resources in sport and recreation. Part II focuses on differences in people and how the differences affect behavior in sport and recreation organizations. In part III, readers explore significant organizational processes in the management of human resources. Part IV discusses two significant outcomes expected of human resource practices: satisfaction and commitment. Finally, a conclusion synthesizes information and presents a set of founding and guiding themes.
Human Resource Management in Sport and Recreation, Third Edition, explains essential concepts in human resources in the sport and recreation industries. The authors present a clear and concise treatise on the critical aspects of management of human resources within sport and recreational organizations to help aspiring and current professionals maximize their potential in the field.

‘A Handbook of Alternative Theories of Public Economics edited by Francesco Forte with co-editors seeks to rejuvenate public economics by examining the relevance of schools of economics which compete with the current mainstream. The approaches of public choice, Austrian, Marxian, supply side economics, and new institutional schools are contrasted to the neo-Keynesians and the new political economics. The Handbook highlights features of these schools and points out their long neglected importance in understanding the political economy of the public sector. The Handbook is an insightful, unconventional and imaginative book well worth reading by public choice experts, public sector analysts and practitioners.’
– Gordon Tullock, formerly of George Mason University School of Law, US’A Handbook of Alternative Theories of Public Economics is especially welcome because it gathers studies on the problems of public economics from widely different angles. Long gone is the time when it was enough to study Musgrave to be up to date in the economics of government and social welfare. The field is now hotly disputed, so that this Handbook will prove informative about parts of the literature of which the specialist may be unaware. Prof. Forte, the principal editor, is co-author of four empirical studies on questions of the size, the finance and some particular effects of government. One of these is within a section on ‘Public bads’ that includes articles on corruption and the informal economy not usually found in texts on public economics. There are essays extending the research programme of the Austrian School on the State to cycle theory and the euro. No less interesting are the articles on government failure. For me the collection has proved especially interesting for the number of essays on justice, fairness, utility and rationality: it is very convenient to have the different approaches to these contentious questions treated with no attempt to paper over the cracks.’
– Pedro Schwartz, San Pablo University, Madrid, Spain
This comprehensive and thought-provoking Handbook reviews public sector economics from pluralist perspectives that either complement or reach beyond mainstream views.
The book takes a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach, drawing on economic elements in the fields of philosophy, sociology, psychology, history and law. The expert contributors present new methodological approaches across these disciplines in five distinct sections:
– ‘Revisiting the Theoretical Foundations’ compares and contrasts Austrians, Marxists, public choice theorists and Keynesians
– ‘Revisiting the Values’ is concerned with justice, welfare, religions and civil rights
– ‘Beyond Rationalistic Rational Choice’ includes chapters devoted to memory, information and group motivation
– The final sections on ‘Optimal Government and Government Failure’ and ‘Public Economics of Public Bads’ deal with competition among governments, their suboptimal size, regulation, corruption, the informal economy, cognitive dissonance, rent seeking, the UN and criminal cycles.
Academics, researchers and students with an interest in economics – particularly public sector economics and Austrian economics and public policy will find this Handbook to be an invaluable reference tool.

This book explores the relationship between wage policy, distribution of income, and ultimately how that distribution impacts on democratic theory. In doing so, it examines the types of policies that are critical to the maintenance of a sustainable democracy. Wage policy, long the domain of economists (particularly neoclassical economists whose focus has been their impact on labour markets and income distribution), has largely been ignored by democratic theorists. Levin-Waldman argues that because wage policy can shape overall income distribution, it has a significant effect on equality levels and is therefore core to democratic theory. Its potential to enhance individual autonomy, which is a necessary condition for democratic participation, is another reason why wage policy should be at the centre of democratic theory.
This book argues that the evolution in wage policy has paralleled economic transformations, which democratic theory has evolved to accommodate. Through a careful analysis of democratic theory and empirical analysis of the impact of wage policy on income distribution, this book concludes that wage policy is an important component in the maintenance of democratic society. A wage policy that raises the wages of those at the bottom can give workers more independence and power as they are placed on more equal footing with managers. This, in and of itself, can be a source of empowerment, effectively enhancing their autonomy. By doing so, workers feel less exploited and income inequality is reduced.
This significant contribution explores the meaning of democratic theory and how it has evolved along with the meaning and specific forms of wage policy, providing invaluable new insights into their connections. This book will be of interest to postgraduates and researchers in economics and political science, as well as policy practitioners interested in issues of income inequality or democratic theory.

This best-selling text prepares students for effective decision making in employment through its managerial perspective on the quantitative and qualitative aspects of marketing research. Churchill’s unique organisation allows students to develop an appreciation of the six steps of the research process. With a flexible, modular design and numerous examples and cases, this book provides an unequalled balance of theory and practice. Features: * The text organization follows the classic six stages in the research process, which defined the way the course was taught when Churchill’s first edition was introduced in the 1970s. * A modular design enhances teaching flexibility by placing some of the more difficult material in appendices immediately after each chapter. * Supporting data bases reflect actual company experiences included in the text and provide students with first-hand experience in analyzing statistical problems. New to this edition: * Over 25 percent of the cases are new and another 30 percent have been revised. * Increased emphasis on the international aspects of the marketing research. * Careful attention has been paid to the current impact of technology and decision support systems in the field of marketing research. * A new video case, designed to be viewed in short, topical segments, illustrates key textual points and encourages interactive learning. * “Research Realities” detail applications of new information technology in the general field of marketing research as well as in specific situations. Of the 85 Research Realities, more than 25 percent are new. * Increased coverage of ethics includes a conceptual framework for viewing ethics choices in Appendix 2A, and more ethical scenarios that students need to address in subsequent chapters.
Today’s history and cultural heritage museum leaders are part visionary and part foot soldier, but what makes them tick? Are there attitudes, philosophies and skills that set some people apart from the thousands charged with moving institutions forward? What lessons can we draw from their stories? Now more than ever, success as a museum leader doesn’t necessarily come with longevity, scholarship or curatorial achievement. In fact, today’s successful leaders often bring myriad skills to the table, creating a style that works both personally and professionally. This snapshot of museum leadership focuses in particular on history and cultural heritage organizations to help readers understand the power of individual leadership and its relationship to organizational strength.
This book features:
• 36 interviews with leaders in the field from a range of positions and institutions
• 10 myths of museum leadership and why they’re wrong
• 10 simple truths of museum leadership
• Leadership “agenda” with criteria and goals for individual and organizational development
Using personal insights of the history museum field’s most engaging, innovative and entrepreneurial leaders, Leadership Matters profiles what makes inspiring leadership in 21st century institutions. These profiles focus not only on history museum presidents, directors, and CEOs, but also on the “leaders within”—deputies, vice-presidents and department heads, as well as their counterparts in the boardroom. Ackerson and Baldwin have brought together a resource to help individuals and institutions move from the status quo to being innovative and influential.
